Content Rewards: How
to Qualify and Get Paid
Published · Last updated
If you were in X's revenue sharing program, you got the notice in August: no new enrolments, a final payout around 11 September, and a new program with a new name. If you were not in it, you probably saw the headline number instead. The impression bar dropped from 5 million to 500,000, and suddenly a lot of mid-sized accounts are wondering if they finally qualify.
Both groups tend to miss the same thing. The number went down, but what counts went down with it. Only verified viewers count, only the Home Timeline counts, replies don't count at all, and every post you get paid for now has to pass an originality test. This guide walks through the rules exactly as X wrote them, then gets into what they mean for how you should actually post.
What Is the X Original Content Rewards Program?
It is X's creator payout program, announced by the @XCreators account on 7 August 2026 as "a new way to reward creators who bring original ideas, expertise, reporting, creativity, and commentary to X." It replaces Creator Revenue Sharing, which paid creators mainly on engagement and impressions from Premium users.
The switchover ran on a fixed timeline:
- 7 August 2026: revenue sharing stopped taking new members, and the new program opened.
- 28 August 2026: the first Original Content Rewards payout.
- 7 September 2026: the last day revenue sharing members earned anything.
- 8 September 2026: X began letting former revenue sharing members apply.
- Around 11 September 2026: the final revenue sharing payout.
- 25 September 2026: the first payment for former members who enrolled from 8 September.
Nobody was moved across automatically. If you were earning under revenue sharing, you have to meet the new requirements and apply like everyone else. The one shortcut: if you already completed ID verification and connected a payout method, X says you won't need to do either again. If your monetization was paused for a past policy violation, you can't enrol at all. For a full side-by-side of the two programs, see X revenue sharing vs Original Content Rewards.
Original Content Rewards Requirements
Here is the eligibility list from X's help page, word for word where it matters. To apply you must:
- Be 18 or older.
- Live in a country where the program is available.
- Have an account in good standing, with no history of repeatedly violating X's Monetization Standards or Terms of Service.
- Have a Personal or Business account.
- Subscribe to X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business. Premium Basic does not qualify you.
- Have at least 500 verified followers.
- Have at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days. Impressions on replies are excluded.
- Regularly post original content.
Do the division on that impression number and you get roughly 5,600 qualifying impressions a day for three months. The old revenue sharing bar was 5 million organic impressions over the same window, about 55,600 a day. So on paper the new bar is ten times lower.
In practice it is not ten times easier, because three filters now sit on top of that number. Views from free accounts don't count. Views outside the Home Timeline don't count. And views on your replies don't count. An account that cleared 5 million mostly by replying under bigger posts can find its qualifying number is a small fraction of its headline impressions. The quickest check is the eligibility tracker in Creator Studio, covered below.
What Counts as a Qualified Impression?
Qualified impressions are what you get paid on, so this definition is the most important sentence in the program. X defines them as "unique impressions from Premium users (subscribers to X Premium Basic, Premium, Premium+, or Premium Business) on the Home Timeline feed, where at least 50% of the post is visible." Three things are excluded: repeat impressions from the same account on the same post, paid or promoted or artificially generated impressions, and fraudulent impressions.
Each part of that definition changes how you should think about reach:
- Free viewers are worth nothing here. A post that goes viral with non-paying accounts can post huge view counts and earn very little. Premium Basic viewers do count, even though Basic subscribers can't join the program themselves.
- Your superfans only count once. The same person seeing your post five times is one qualified impression. Earnings grow with new Premium viewers, not with the same loyal 200 people refreshing.
- The Home Timeline is the storefront. Replies are carved out of the eligibility number, and payouts are counted on the Home Timeline feed. The conversation under someone else's post is where you get discovered, not where this program is built to pay you.
- You can't buy your way in. Promoted impressions are excluded, so running ads on a post adds nothing to your qualifying total.
What Counts as Original Content?
X's own definition: "content you personally create that reflects your own voice, perspective, expertise, or creativity." The announcement is more generous than most people expect, and it explicitly protects commentary. Starting from someone else's post, video or screenshot is fine. What matters is the value you add on top.
| Counts as original | Does not count |
|---|---|
| Your own writing, threads, Articles, reporting or analysis | Posts copied or substantially reproduced from another creator |
| Photos and videos you created | Content downloaded from X or another platform and re-uploaded (unless you made it) |
| Memes, graphics and illustrations you designed | Reposts with a caption or text overlay that only describes what is already there |
| Commentary, reactions or insights that add meaningful perspective | Reaction posts with little or no real commentary |
| Existing content transformed through your own context, analysis, narration, humour or editing | Light edits alone: cropping, filters, borders, watermarks, speed changes |
X gives creators a one-line test to run before posting: "Would this content still be valuable without my contribution?" If yes, you haven't added enough.
The exclusions most people will trip on
The table covers the obvious cases. These four are in the rules too, and they catch accounts that think of themselves as original:
- Monetization talk. Content is ineligible if it is "exclusively focused on monetization coaching, monetization discussion, or maximizing payouts." The classic "X just paid me $1,286" screenshot post is still great for growth. It just won't earn.
- A helpful Community Note. A noted post is ineligible. Hot takes with shaky facts now cost you money, not just reputation.
- Engagement solicitation. To stay in the program you must not keep "instructing users to engage with posts, such as asking to like, reply, bookmark, follow, or repost." The popular "comment GUIDE and I'll DM it to you" format sits squarely inside that description.
- Automated creation or posting. Content "created or posted using automated means" is excluded. X hasn't spelled out where scheduling tools or AI-assisted writing land, so keep the posts you want paid for unmistakably built on your own thinking.
How to Apply for Original Content Rewards
Once the tracker shows you are eligible, the application itself is short:
- Open Creator Studio, then Original Content Rewards. This is also where you check eligibility at any time, so it is worth watching while you build toward the thresholds.
- Pick your best original posts. Creators who have been through it report that X shows a selection of recent posts and asks you to choose the 10 that best represent your original work. Choose the ones that are most clearly yours, not the ones with the most views. A personal lesson with 20,000 views makes a stronger case than a recycled meme with two million.
- Wait for the review. X says it will notify you of the outcome within three business days.
- If you are rejected, appeal once. You get one appeal. If that fails, you can reapply after 90 days, provided you still meet every requirement.
ID verification and a connected payout method are part of setup. Former revenue sharing members who already completed both carry them over.
How Much Does X Pay for Original Content?
Nobody outside X can give you a real rate yet. X pays on qualified impressions every two weeks, but it has not published a rate per 1,000 impressions, and the program only started paying in late August 2026.
Be careful with the per-1,000 figures still circulating. They describe the old program. Under revenue sharing, one well-documented account was paid about $1.47 to $1.77 per 1,000 verified impressions. That is useful history, not a forecast. The new program counts different things (unique Premium views on the Home Timeline, original posts only) and draws on its own pool, so the rate will land wherever X sets it.
Two things carried over from the old setup. Payouts arrive every two weeks, and X's monetization standards set a $30 minimum before anything is paid out. Anything under that rolls into the next cycle. The honest planning assumption: treat your first two or three payouts as your real rate card, and until then, value the program as a way to cover your Premium subscription rather than an income.
How to Maximize Your Original Content Rewards
The rules reward a different posting mix than the old program did. These are the adjustments that follow directly from them:
- Split the job in two. Replies grow the account, and original posts get paid. Keep replying under bigger posts in your niche, because that is still how people find you and follow you, and every Premium follower counts toward your 500. Just stop expecting replies to move your payout.
- Put your best thinking in standalone posts. Your take, your numbers, your analysis should live in posts, threads and Articles that show up in people's Home Timeline, not buried in a reply chain.
- Quote with something to say. X explicitly counts commentary and reactions that add perspective. A quote post with a real argument attached is original. A quote post that says "this 👇" is not.
- Go where the Premium readers are. Only Premium views pay. Tech, AI, software, finance, crypto and build-in-public audiences are dense with subscribers, so the same effort earns more there.
- Chase new viewers, not repeat ones. Because each account counts once per post, growth in reach beats growth in loyalty for payouts. Joining big conversations early is the cheapest way to put new Premium readers in front of your posts.
- Fact-check before you post the spicy one. A helpful Community Note makes that post ineligible, which turns being wrong into a direct cost.
- Retire the engagement-bait calls to action. "Like if you agree" and "comment YES" are now a compliance risk, not just a style choice.
None of this is a trick. It is the program doing what X said it would: paying people for what only they could have posted.
Where Ghosti Fits
The new rules split the work, and the growth half is where tooling earns its keep. Reaching 500 verified followers and staying visible means replying a lot, early, in the right conversations. That is exactly what Ghosti is built for. It is a live generation agent that works inside the X feed: Hunt Mode surfaces the posts in your niche worth replying to, and Reply Guy generates a reply to them in your voice, trained on your own examples through Ghost DNA. It is the reply-led growth loop in how to grow on X with replies, minus the hours of hunting.
For the posts you want paid, the idea has to be yours, and that suits a voice-first tool. Give Ghosti your own take, a lesson, or what you shipped this week, and Thread Studio or the post generator turns it into a post or thread that sounds like you rather than like generic AI. It runs on your own AI key, so you pick the model and pay the provider directly. Plans and the free trial are on ghostiapp.com.
Key takeaways
- Original Content Rewards replaced Creator Revenue Sharing: new enrolments closed on 7 August 2026 and revenue sharing earnings stopped on 7 September. Former members must reapply.
- You need X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business, 500 verified followers, and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in 90 days. Reply impressions are excluded.
- You are paid on qualified impressions: unique Premium viewers on the Home Timeline with at least half the post visible. Free viewers, repeat views and promoted views pay nothing.
- Only original content earns. Copies, re-uploads, monetization-talk posts, automated posts and posts with a helpful Community Note are all ineligible.
- Split the work: replies grow your audience and your verified follower count, standalone original posts earn the payout.
Frequently asked questions
Do replies count toward Original Content Rewards?
Not toward eligibility. X says the 500,000 Home Timeline impressions requirement excludes impressions on replies, and payouts are counted on the Home Timeline feed. Replies are still worth doing, because they are how new people find and follow you, but the posts that earn are your own standalone ones.
Do I need to reapply if I was in Creator Revenue Sharing?
Yes. Nobody was moved across automatically. Former members could start applying from 8 September 2026 and must meet the new requirements. If you already completed ID verification and connected a payout method, you will not need to repeat those steps. Accounts whose monetization is paused for a past violation are not eligible.
Can I join Original Content Rewards with X Premium Basic?
No. You need X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business to apply. Basic still matters on the other side, though: views from Basic subscribers count as qualified impressions on your posts.
How much does X pay per 1,000 impressions now?
X has not published a rate for Original Content Rewards. It pays every two weeks based on qualified impressions from Premium users on your original posts. The per-1,000 figures that circulate online, usually around $1 to $2, describe the old revenue sharing program and should not be treated as the new rate.
Do quote posts count as original content?
They can. X explicitly lists commentary, reactions and insights that add meaningful perspective as original content, and says starting from someone else's post is fine. A quote post only counts if your addition is the main source of value. A one-word reaction or a caption describing the original will not qualify.
Can AI-assisted posts earn from Original Content Rewards?
X excludes content "created or posted using automated means" and rewards content that reflects your own voice, perspective and expertise, but it has not said exactly where AI-assisted writing falls. The safe reading: the idea, the experience and the numbers should be yours. A post built on your own take is a very different thing from a feed of generated filler, and the filler is what this program is designed to stop paying for.
Which countries is Original Content Rewards available in?
X requires you to live in a country where the program is available, but the announcement does not list them. The eligibility check in Creator Studio, under Original Content Rewards, tells you whether your account qualifies, including location.
What is the difference between Original Content Rewards and revenue sharing?
The impression bar dropped from 5 million organic impressions to 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users, replies stopped counting, joining now means an application X reviews, and only original posts earn. The 500 verified follower requirement stayed the same. The full breakdown is in our revenue sharing vs Original Content Rewards comparison.
