Content Rewards: What Changed

How-to

For three years, X revenue sharing was the answer to "does X pay creators?" Hit the thresholds, connect Stripe, and money arrived every two weeks. Then an announcement on 7 August 2026 gave it one month to live.

If you are searching for X revenue sharing requirements today, most of what you will find describes a program that no longer exists. This is the side-by-side of what it was, what replaced it, and the handful of changes that actually decide whether you earn more or less under the new rules. The short version: it is a better deal for people with something to say, and a much worse one for anyone who was farming replies.

Is X Revenue Sharing Ending?

It has already ended. According to X's announcement, this is how the handover ran:

  • 7 August 2026: revenue sharing stopped accepting new enrolments. The Original Content Rewards program opened the same day.
  • 14 and 28 August 2026: revenue sharing paid out on its normal schedule.
  • 7 September 2026: the last day revenue sharing members earned anything.
  • 8 September 2026: X began rolling out applications to the new program for former members.
  • Around 11 September 2026: the final revenue sharing payout, covering earnings through 7 September.
  • 25 September 2026: the first payment for former members who enrolled in the new program from 8 September.

There is no way to stay on the old terms. If revenue sharing was paying you, your only route to more X payouts is to qualify for, and be approved into, the X Original Content Rewards program.

The Five Changes That Actually Matter

1. The bar is ten times lower, but heavily filtered

5 million impressions over three months is about 55,600 a day. 500,000 over 90 days is about 5,600 a day. That looks like a gift until you read what counts: only views from verified users, only on the Home Timeline, and nothing on replies. The old bar counted organic impressions from anyone. For an account whose audience is mostly free users, the new number can be harder to reach than it looks.

2. Replies stopped counting

This is the biggest practical change. The fastest route to revenue sharing for a small account was reply volume: hundreds of replies a day under bigger posts, stacking up millions of impressions. Those impressions are now excluded from eligibility by name. Replies still grow an account, they just no longer qualify it.

3. Originality became a condition of payment

Revenue sharing paid on engagement and impressions from verified users. Now every post also has to pass an originality test: content is ineligible if it is copied, re-uploaded from another platform, or only lightly edited. X's test is blunt: "Would this content still be valuable without my contribution?" Commentary and reactions still count, provided you add real perspective.

4. Some formats became a liability

Posts "exclusively focused on monetization coaching, monetization discussion, or maximizing payouts" are ineligible, which covers the "here's my X payout" genre. A post with a helpful Community Note is ineligible. And "repeatedly instructing users to engage", asking them to like, reply, bookmark, follow or repost, can get you removed from the program.

5. You apply instead of just qualifying

Revenue sharing was mostly a matter of meeting the numbers and finishing setup. The new program is an application that X reviews. Hitting the thresholds gets you through the door, and the originality of your posts decides whether you are approved.

Who Wins and Who Loses?

My read: this is a good change for anyone who actually has something to say, and I would rather build under these rules than the old ones.

Winners:

  • Small and mid-sized original creators. Writers, analysts, builders and meme-makers with a Premium-heavy audience face a bar a tenth the size of the old one.
  • Niche experts. Payouts follow unique Premium viewers, and paying subscribers cluster in tech, AI, finance, crypto and build-in-public circles.
  • People who were being copied. Accounts that re-uploaded other people's work are now shut out of payouts.

Losers:

  • Reply farmers. The strategy that cleared 5 million fastest no longer counts toward the threshold at all.
  • Aggregator and re-upload accounts. Their core format is now explicitly ineligible.
  • Engagement-bait accounts. "Like if you agree" and "comment YES" posts are now a removal risk, on top of being ineligible for pay.
  • Monetization gurus. The posts about how much X pays are the one topic X will not pay for.

The open question is money. X has not published a rate for the new program, so nobody knows yet whether a typical qualifying creator earns more or less per month. Anyone quoting a per-1,000 figure for Original Content Rewards before a few payout cycles have passed is guessing.

What Former Revenue Sharing Members Should Do

  1. Check your status. Creator Studio, then Original Content Rewards, shows whether you currently meet the requirements. X says to check it here at any time.
  2. Look at where your impressions came from. If most of your reach came from replies or from free accounts, your qualifying number may be well below your headline impressions. Better to know now.
  3. Choose your application posts deliberately. Creators who have applied report being asked to pick 10 posts that represent their original work. Choose the ones that are unmistakably yours, not the biggest ones.
  4. Drop engagement-bait habits before you apply. Soliciting likes, replies or reposts is grounds for removal once you are in.
  5. Skip the paperwork you have already done. If your ID is verified and your payout method is connected, X carries both over.

One caveat from X: if your monetization was paused for a previous policy violation, you can't enrol at all.

What to Change in How You Post

The strategy shift fits in a sentence: replies grow you, originals pay you.

Keep replying. It is still the most reliable way for a small account to get seen, win Premium followers and reach the 500 verified followers the program needs. Ghosti makes that part fast: Hunt Mode surfaces the posts in your niche worth joining, and Reply Guy generates a reply in your voice, right inside the X feed. The playbook is in how to grow on X with replies.

Then move your best thinking out of reply threads and into standalone posts, threads and Articles, because the Home Timeline is where you get paid now. If you are starting from zero, how to get monetized on X fast lays out the whole route under the new rules.

Key takeaways

  • X revenue sharing is over: closed to new members on 7 August 2026, earnings stopped on 7 September, final payout around 11 September.
  • Its replacement, Original Content Rewards, keeps the 500 verified follower bar but swaps 5 million organic impressions for 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users, with replies excluded.
  • Only original content earns. Re-uploads, light edits, monetization talk, automated posts and Community-Noted posts are ineligible.
  • Nobody was moved across automatically. Former members apply in Creator Studio, and X reviews applications within three business days.
  • Original creators in Premium-heavy niches gain the most. Reply farmers, aggregators and engagement-bait accounts lose the most.

Frequently asked questions

Is X revenue sharing still available?

No. X stopped accepting new revenue sharing enrolments on 7 August 2026, and members stopped earning after 7 September 2026. The replacement is the Original Content Rewards program, which you apply for in Creator Studio.

When was the last X revenue sharing payout?

X scheduled the final revenue sharing payout for on or around 11 September 2026, covering earnings through 7 September. Before that, the regular payouts on 14 and 28 August ran as normal.

Do revenue sharing members move to Original Content Rewards automatically?

No. Former members had to meet the new requirements and apply from 8 September 2026. Completed ID verification and connected payout methods carry over, and accounts whose monetization is paused for a past violation are not eligible.

Are the X revenue sharing requirements still 5 million impressions?

No. That was the old program. Original Content Rewards needs 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, excluding replies, plus 500 verified followers and a Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription.

Is Original Content Rewards easier to qualify for than revenue sharing?

The number is ten times smaller, but only verified viewers on the Home Timeline count and replies are excluded. Accounts with a Premium-heavy audience that post originals will usually find it easier. Accounts that relied on reply volume or free-account reach may find it harder.

Does X still pay for replies?

Reply impressions are excluded from the Original Content Rewards eligibility threshold, and payouts are counted on the Home Timeline feed. Replies are still valuable for growth, since they are how people discover and follow you, but your standalone original posts are what the program pays for.

Will I earn more or less under Original Content Rewards?

Nobody knows yet. X has not published a rate for the new program, and it only began paying in late August 2026. Creators with original posts that reach many different Premium viewers are best placed. Wait for a few payout cycles before trusting anyone's per-1,000 figure.
